Jewelry
Even the smallest pieces of jewelry can be engraved. The difficulty  with any jewelry is holding it in the jig. More time is spent on setting up the jig for the perfect position of the piece. Several test runs will be made to insure that the piece will not move and that the engraving will be precisely placed. Extremely fine pieces may require the engraver to design a jig just for that piece.

Sterling Silver & Silver Plate
Silver products are usually engraved using diamond drag. A diamond chip on the end of the cutter "scribes" a fine line on the surface.

Sterling engraves with a clear, sharp line. Minor scratches and mars can be buffed out of sterling pieces, and the original shine restored using a good polish. After polishing, silver should not be touched with bare hands as the skin oils will cause the piece to tarnish faster.

The quality of plated items is very important. Inexpensive items can chip or flake off silver during engraving. Plated items cannot be buffed as the plating will be removed.

Engraving Stock
Most metals can be engraved. Depending on the kind of metal, the type of cutter and the process will vary. Brass and aluminum are soft and burnish or diamond drag easily using light to moderate pressure. Stainless steel is hard and requires slow cutter and feed speeds with firm pressure using special cutters.

Other Materials
Glass, wood, marble, acrylic and many other materials can be engraved (Granite is usually sandblasted).
